Romans Chapter 11: Grafted In

Key Texts: Romans 11:1-36; (Interpretive Text) John 15:1-6

In Chapter 11 Paul continues to talk about the salvation of the Jews as well as the salvation of the Gentiles. He touches on subjects he has already discussed such as election (chosen), predestination (determined beforehand), salvation by faith in Jesus, and national Israel as opposed to Spiritual Israel; but he now uses a much different illustration to drive these points home. Paul likens the salvation that is now available to all people through faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ, to the process of grating. Specifically, the grafting of wild Olive branches into a cultivated Olive tree which, by the way is the opposite of how things are done in the natural.

In doing so, he shows us how God’s plan of salvation is explicitly woven throughout the Old Testament (God’s Covenant relationship with The Nation of Israel) and is expressly tied to the New Covenant (which includes National and Spiritual Israel – Jews and Gentiles) and its fulfillment in Christ Jesus.

Paul’s illustration of the olive tree in Romans 11:16-24 serves as a central metaphor. The natural branches (Israel) and the wild olive shoots (Gentiles) are united through the nourishing root, which is God. This imagery reinforces the idea that all believers share in the richness of God’s promises, regardless of their background.
