Influence: Part 1 – What Is It?
In this sermon, we delve into the concept of influence, drawing lessons from the story of King David as he attempted to bring the Ark of the Covenant back to Jerusalem. This narrative, found in 1 Chronicles 13 and 1 Chronicles 15, serves as a backdrop to explore how influence shapes our decisions and spiritual lives.
The Story of David and the Ark
King David’s desire to return the Ark to Jerusalem was rooted in a longing to restore God’s presence among the Israelites. However, his initial attempt was flawed due to cultural influence rather than divine instruction. David’s method mirrored the Philistines’ approach from 1 Samuel 6, where they transported the Ark on a new cart. This was contrary to God’s command that only the Levites should carry the Ark using poles, as outlined in 1 Chronicles 15:2.
David’s decision, influenced by the Philistine culture, resulted in the tragic death of Uzzah, who touched the Ark to steady it when the oxen stumbled (1 Chronicles 13:9-10). This incident highlights the danger of allowing cultural norms to override divine directives.
Understanding Influence
Influence, both as a noun and a verb, is the power to affect change in behavior, beliefs, or opinions. The sermon emphasizes the pervasive nature of influence, noting that even David, a man after God’s own heart, was swayed by cultural practices.
The modern-day parallel is drawn with the rise of social media influencers, who wield significant power over people’s choices and perceptions. The global influencer marketing industry is valued at over $32 billion, illustrating the massive impact these figures have on our daily lives.
Questions for Reflection
To navigate the influences in our lives, the sermon encourages self-reflection through the following questions:
-
What influences exist in my life?
- Consider social media, other forms of media, cultural trends, educational inputs, and personal desires as potential influences.
-
What is being influenced in my life?
- Reflect on how these influences affect your thoughts, words, actions, beliefs, and relationships.
-
To what extent am I being influenced?
- Evaluate the depth of these influences and their alignment with your faith.
Biblical Guidance
Scripture offers guidance on managing influence:
- Exodus 23:2: “Do not follow the crowd in doing wrong.”
- Romans 12:2: “Do not conform to the pattern of this world.”
- Colossians 2:6-8: “Continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him… See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy.”
These verses remind us to ground our lives in God’s truth, resisting cultural pressures that lead us away from His path.
Conclusion
The sermon concludes with a call to guard our hearts and minds against ungodly influences. By examining the sources and effects of influence in our lives, we can align ourselves more closely with God’s will, much like David eventually did. This alignment promises the blessings and presence of God as we strive to live according to His commandments.
