The Call to be Faithful
In today’s sermon, we continued our exploration of the Book of Romans, focusing on the powerful truths in Romans 1. This chapter challenges us to understand the Gospel as a call to follow Jesus faithfully, emphasizing that faithfulness is not merely a one-time decision but a lifelong commitment.
The Call of the Gospel
The Gospel’s call is a call to follow, as illustrated in Matthew 4:18-22, where Jesus calls Simon Peter and Andrew, and later James and John, to leave their nets and follow Him. This call requires us to hear, understand, respond, and continue to follow faithfully.
Key Themes:
- Faithfulness: The call of the Gospel is fundamentally a call to be faithful. Romans 1:5-6 highlights that we are called to the obedience that comes from faith.
- Belonging: Faithfulness is about belonging to Jesus, not just making a decision. We are called to be His holy people (Romans 1:7).
- Lifelong Commitment: Romans 1:17 reminds us that “the righteous will live by faith,” indicating that our faith journey is ongoing from “first to last.”
The Struggle of Faithfulness
Faithfulness is not an easy path. Even Paul, a powerhouse of faith, faced struggles and blockades (Romans 1:13). He emphasizes the importance of a supportive church community to encourage one another in faithfulness.
Challenges Highlighted:
- Temptations and Sin: Romans 1:18-32 warns against exchanging the truth of God for a lie and abandoning natural relations, leading to sin and God’s wrath.
- Cultural Pressures: The world often pressures us to conform, but we are called to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives (Titus 2:11-14).
Encouragement to Stay Faithful
Paul’s letters to Timothy and Titus offer encouragement and guidance:
- Watch Your Life: 1 Timothy 4:16 urges us to watch our life and doctrine closely, persevering in them for our salvation and those who hear us.
- Hold to Faith: 1 Timothy 1:18-19 advises holding on to faith and a good conscience to avoid shipwrecking our faith.
- Live Godly Lives: Titus 2:11-14 teaches us to say no to ungodliness and worldly passions, living godly lives in this present age.
Walking on Water: A Metaphor for Faith
The story of Peter walking on water (Matthew 14:22-33) serves as a metaphor for our faith journey. Just as Peter needed to focus on Jesus to walk on water, we must keep our eyes on Him to navigate the storms of life. When Peter faltered, Jesus immediately reached out to save him, illustrating that our ability to “walk on water” depends on our reliance on Jesus.
Conclusion
The call to be faithful is a call to a holy life, empowered by God’s grace and strength. As we continue our journey, let us encourage one another, hold fast to our faith, and keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith. As we celebrate baptisms today, we are reminded that this is not just a ceremony but a declaration of lifelong commitment to follow Jesus faithfully.
