Lessons of The Prodigal (Part 5 – Always and Everything)
Key Passage: Luke 15:11-32
31 “‘My son,’ the father said, ‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours.
Imagine two sides of a coin. Each side is different, but they are both a part of the same coin
That’s how it is with our last lesson from The Parable of The Prodigal Son
It is a truth too powerful to ignore and one we need to carry with us each day of our lives and it is one that I keep hearing in my head ever since we began studying this parable
On the one side of the coin we have “You are always with me” on the other side of the coin we have “everything I have is yours.”
Each of these promises also have two sides. One side is full of strength and encouragement and is much more delightful to consider. The other side of each promise, while just as true and full of power, is a little more challenging and somber.
In the final installment of the “Lessons of The Prodigal” series, the focus is on the profound truths found in the parable of the Prodigal Son, specifically highlighting the father’s statement to the older son: “You are always with me, and everything I have is yours.” This statement encapsulates two powerful truths that resonate deeply with our relationship with God.
Main Themes
1. You Are Always With Me
This theme emphasizes the omnipresence of God in our lives. The sermon draws parallels between the father in the parable and our Heavenly Father, who is always with us, no matter our circumstances.
- Psalm 139:1-12: The Psalmist marvels at God’s intimate knowledge of us, stating, “Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?” This reflects the assurance that God is with us in all situations.
- Jeremiah 23:24: “Who can hide in secret places so that I cannot see them?” assures us of God’s ever-present nature.
- Isaiah 41:10: “Do not fear, for I am with you,” reinforces this comforting truth.
- Matthew 28:20: Jesus promises, “I am with you always, to the very end of the age,” offering encouragement and strength.
2. Everything I Have Is Yours
This part of the sermon highlights the abundant provision of God. Just as the father in the parable assures the older son that all he has is his, so too does God assure us of His boundless blessings.
- Psalm 24:1: “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it,” underscores the vastness of God’s resources.
- Haggai 2:8: “The silver is mine and the gold is mine,” declares God’s ownership of all wealth.
- Matthew 6:25-33: Encourages us not to worry about material needs, reminding us that God, who clothes the lilies and feeds the birds, will surely care for us.
Reflections
The sermon invites us to carry these truths with us daily, likening them to a coin with two sides:
- You Are Always With Me: This truth is both comforting and sobering, reminding us of God’s constant presence, even when we stray.
- Everything I Have Is Yours: Encourages us to trust in God’s provision, while also acknowledging that everything we have is ultimately His.
Conclusion
The message concludes with a call to action: to live in the light of these truths, laying down what we must and picking up what God calls us to. It challenges us to embrace God’s presence and provision, trusting that He is always with us and that everything He has is ours. As we navigate life’s challenges, these truths serve as a foundation for faith and a guide for daily living.
Let these lessons from the Prodigal Son transform our understanding of God’s love and provision, reminding us that in His eyes, we are always with Him, and everything He has is at our disposal.
