The Who, What & When of Missions
Key Scripture: Romans 10
In this sermon, Pastor David Filener explores the profound theme of missions, drawing from Romans 10 as the foundational scripture. This chapter emphasizes the necessity of spreading the Gospel, highlighting the journey from belief to salvation.
The Who of Missions
Missions focus on those who need to hear the Gospel. Pastor Filener emphasizes that:
- Romans 10:9-10 reminds us that salvation begins with confessing Jesus as Lord and believing in His resurrection.
- The message must reach both those who have never heard of Jesus and those who have wandered away from their faith.
- Jesus’ mission, as described in Luke 19:10, was to seek and save the lost, a mission that continues through us.
The sermon also touches on the importance of reaching those who have been misled by false teachings, especially in regions like North America where a distorted Gospel is often preached.
The What of Missions
Missions are about sending those who are called to preach the Gospel. Pastor Filener explains:
- Romans 10:14-15 highlights the necessity of sending preachers so that people may hear and believe.
- Missions involve declaring God’s glory among nations, as stated in 1 Chronicles 16:24.
- Not all are called to be missionaries in the traditional sense, but all believers are called to share the Gospel in their immediate circles.
The When of Missions
The urgency of missions cannot be overstated:
- John 4:35 urges believers to recognize the ripe harvest fields, emphasizing the immediacy of the task.
- 2 Corinthians 6:2 declares, “Now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation.”
- With the unpredictability of life and the return of Christ, missions must be a priority.
The Role of Faith and Support
Pastor Filener stresses the importance of faith promises and designated giving to support missionaries:
- Faith promises are commitments beyond regular tithes, enabling the church to fund missions effectively.
- The Assemblies of God, since its founding, has prioritized evangelism and missions, growing from 300 adherents to nearly 86 million globally.
Conclusion
The call to missions is a call to action. Pastor Filener challenges the congregation to be “all in” for missions, whether through going, sending, or supporting those who are sent. The fields are ripe, and the time is now. As believers, we are entrusted with the responsibility to ensure that everyone hears the name of Jesus, fulfilling the Great Commission as outlined in Matthew 28:19-20.
This sermon invites reflection on our role in God’s mission and encourages active participation in spreading the Gospel, both locally and globally.
