SAVED: Understanding Salvation
What does it mean to be saved and how do we obtain this gift of God?
As we close out the year and reflect on the meaning of salvation, it’s vital to revisit the foundational truths of our faith. This message, rooted in the Christmas story, serves as a bridge into the new year, guiding us towards a deeper understanding of what it truly means to be saved.
The Name of Jesus
The sermon begins with a focus on the name of Jesus, derived from the Greek form of Joshua or Yeshua, meaning “The Lord saves.” This is highlighted in Matthew 1:21: “She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” Similarly, Luke 2:11 reinforces this message: “Today in the town of David, a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.”
What Does It Mean to Be Saved?
Being saved involves a realization and recognition of several key truths:
- There is a real God who became a real person out of love to save us from our sins.
- Salvation begins with acknowledging the existence and validity of these truths.
- Romans 3:23 and Romans 6:23 remind us of the curse of sin: “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” and “For the wages of sin is death.”
The Process of Salvation
-
Realization and Recognition
- We must recognize the curse of sin and our need for a Savior.
- Galatians 3:13 explains how Christ redeemed us from this curse.
-
Relief and Redemption from Sin
- Jesus not only relieves us from the curse but also redeems us from the debt of sin.
- Isaiah 44:22: “I have swept away your offenses like a cloud, your sins like the morning mist.”
-
Restoration to New Life
- Salvation restores us to the life God intended before the fall.
- 2 Corinthians 5:17: “If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”
How Do We Obtain Salvation?
Salvation is obtained by grace through faith:
- Ephesians 2:8-10: “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.”
- Faith is not a work, but a response to God’s grace.
- John 3:16 encapsulates the essence of faith: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
Living Out Our Salvation
- Repentance is a key component, turning away from sin and towards God.
- Walking in the Light: 1 John 1:7 encourages us to walk in the light of Christ.
- Titus 3:5-7 reminds us that our salvation is not due to our righteousness, but through the mercy of God.
Conclusion
As we reflect on these truths, we are encouraged to examine our faith and ensure we are living in the light of God’s salvation. 2 Corinthians 13:5 urges us to test ourselves and affirm that Christ is in us. Let us enter the new year with a renewed commitment to walk in the salvation that Jesus has provided, allowing Him to rule and reign in our hearts.
