Joshua 3:1-4 (NIV)
3 Early in the morning Joshua and all the Israelites set out from Shittim and went to the Jordan, where they camped before crossing over. 2 After three days the officers went throughout the camp, 3 giving orders to the people: “When you see the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, and the Levitical priests carrying it, you are to move out from your positions and follow it. 4 Then you will know which way to go, since you have never been this way before. But keep a distance of about two thousand cubits[a] between you and the ark; do not go near it.”
Joshua and the Israelites stood at the crossroads of their future. Behind them lay 40 years of wandering in the dessert, a generation that had died because of their unbelief, doubt, fear, disobedience and many failures. Still there had been many mighty miracles of provision, victories in battle, supernatural manifestations of God’s powerful presence, mount Sinai and the giving of the law, deliverance, faith and trust in Jehovah God. And now something new…. A new beginning… A new home… New challenges, new blessings, and new opportunities… And a promise that God would lead the way.
Today we stand at the crossroads of yet another new year. Much lays behind us. Victories and failures; fear and faith, doubt and trust, obedience and disobedience, strength and weakness, joy and sadness. But now something new… A new beginning… A new YEAR… New challenges, new blessings, and new opportunities… A way we’ve never been, simply because we are bound by the linear nature of time and cannot experience our future until it becomes our present.
No one knows for sure what 2018 will bring. We’ve never been this way before. But I invite you to trust that God will show us the way if we keep our eyes on Him.
